The
role of the sanitarian (public health inspector) has changed from the
original primary effort of public health enforcement. As society has
evolved, so the environmental health staff has become the advocate for both
providers and consumers of environmental services, protecting the public's
health through education and prevention.
The
sanitarian shares vital information with licensed operators and owners,
thereby saving them time, money and hardship in getting their services to
the public. This function is often obscured by expected inspection
activities.
In
addition, through education provided to various community groups, local
agencies and organizations, and concerned members of the general public, a
concept of quality living can be created within the local population
enabling each citizen to take personal responsibility for their homes,
entertainment, and working environments.
