School Safety Program

School safety and inspection rules (also known as “Jarod’s Law” rules) went into effect Sept. 27, 2007. The law, named for Jarod Bennett, and its associated rules are designed to protect and improve the environmental health and safety of Ohio ’s primary and secondary school students and the staff working in school buildings.

Jarod Bennett died when an unsecured cafeteria table fell on him at an elementary school in Ohio . This incident spurred an update of the school safety regulations. Enforcement of these state regulations is the job of local health districts.

Program Services:

The new rules require that the local health district inspect each school building every year, with no more than 15 months between inspections.

School districts must provide abatement plans in response to observations and recommendations within 60 days of receiving a report. In addition, the state auditor receives copies of the inspection reports.
