National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) November 27th - December 3rd, 2006

Every year in the United States , on average 5% to 20% of the population becomes infected with influenza virus, or the flu. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized and about 36,000 people die from flu complications. Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu and its severe complications. Anyone who wants to reduce their risk for getting the flu should be vaccinated during each flu season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends an annual flu shot for those at highest risk, including:

§       children 6 to 23 months,

§       pregnant women,

§       adults 50 and older,

§       anyone with chronic illness, and

§       health-care workers

§       persons who live with or care for individuals at highest risk, including household members in frequent contact and who can transmit influenza to those persons

Since flu activity occurs anytime from November through April, it is not too late to get a flu shot, especially for those in a high risk group.

The Logan County Health District will continue to offer flu shots at its 310 South Main Street location until vaccine is gone.  Walk-ins are welcome Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 am to 4 pm.  Call the Health District at 592-9040 for more information.
