Bureau for
Children with Medical Handicaps (BCMH)
Overview
BCMH works closely with local health departments to identify needs
and increase services to children with special health care needs and their families. Some of the services provided by local health departments are:
Early identification and referral of children with possible handicapping conditions Service coordination Advocacy Public health nurse home visits to help families obtain services Work with other agencies and medical providers BCMH assists families with children who have special needs.
Diagnostic services are available to any child until age 21. If a child is determined to have a qualifying
disability, and the parents meet the income guidelines, then a treatment program is initiated.

Diagnostic Program
Purpose
- To rule out a handicapping condition
- To diagnose a condition
- To develop a plan of treatment
Eligibility
- There is no financial eligibility requirement for the Diagnostic Program
- Be under the age of 21
- Be a resident of Ohio
- Be a permanent U.S. resident or U.S. born
- Be under the care of a BCMH-approved physician
- Have a possible medical handicap
Eligible Services
- Consults and office visits to BCMH-approved physicians
- Laboratory tests
- Special diagnostic tests
- X-rays
- Biopsies
- Evaluations for physical, occupational and speech therapy
- Up to 5 days in the hospital
- Psychological evaluation for children under age 6
- Public health nurse services
Ineligible Services/Conditions
- Examinations for acute conditions, such as colds, appendicitis
- Nearsightedness/farsightedness
- Emotional or behavioral problems, such as depression
- Learning disabilities
- Routine well child care
- Physical and psychological exams, sports physicals, SSI evaluations
- Out-of-state care

contact the Logan County Health District BCMH Coordinator.
Length of eligibility - 3 months

Treatment Program
Purpose
To provide ongoing treatment for eligible children.
Eligibility
A child must:
- Be under the age of 21
- Be a permanent US resident or US born
- The family must be financially eligible
- Be a resident of Ohio
- Have an eligible medical handicap
Eligible Conditions are those that are chronic, physically handicapping and can be treated.
Some of the conditions are:
- Diabetes
- Hemophilia
- Cystic fibrosis
- AIDS
- Juvenile arthritis
- Respiratory

- Cleft lip and
palate
- Spina bifida
- Epilepsy

- Cerebral palsy
- Heart defects
- Scoliosis
- Cancer
- Vision problems

Financial Eligibility
How to Apply: A medical application must be submitted by
a BCMH-approved physician who will manage the child's care.
Length of Eligibility: Up to two years, if both financial
and medical eligibility are maintained, up to age 21.
